ST. AUGUSTINE'S ABBEY

LONGPORT - 01227 767345 (TEL/FAX)
| St. Augustine's Abbey is a site of great historical and religious importance. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1989, the Abbey forms part of Queen Bertha's walk which also incorporates St. Martin's Church (the oldest working parish church in England) and Canterbury Cathedral. As one of the oldest monastic sites in Britain, St. Augustine's Abbey offers a unique insight into the history of Christianity as it unfolded in this in this country. Futhermore, the compilation of a new interpretation centre and museum in 1997, to markthe Abbey's 1400th anniversary, means that visitors are now able to discover for themselves the hundreds of artefacts found on the site over the years. These include rare objects such as the burial mitre of Abbot John Dygon and a pair of 10th century Corinthian capitols. As well as its spectacular collection of actifacts, the centre provides a comprehensive mixture of traditional and new audio-visual aids which help bring the story of St. Augutine's mission to life. Particularly impressive are the new audio wand' tours and the video displays, availiable in six languages, which provide the visitor with detailed information about the development of the Abbey and its history. The site continues to welcome visitors from Britain and around the world; individuals, groups, school parties and people participating in religous pilgrimages. Special events during the summer months dedicated to enhancing the visitor' visit, have proved to be informative and successful. The museum shop also provides the visitor with a range of gifts and literature. |

THE CANTERBURY TALES VISITOR ATTRACTION

ST. MARGARET'S STREET - 01227 454888
| A visit to The Canterbury Tales, one of Britain's most popular attractions is like stepping into medieval England for an encounter with scenes and stories from the 14th century. The Canterbury Tales is a wonderfully inventive exhibition peopled by Geoffrey Chaucer's characters in humorous or romantic situations that are fresh today as when they were written. Famous British actors provide the commentary in many languages. The exhibition is carefully researched, full of surprises and above all great fun! The starting point for our journey is the Fabard Inn, London, just as Chaucer's Pilgrims are departing on the hazardous journey to Canterbury they agree to have a story telling competition on the way. The Knight's Tale is the first, an ancient story of rivalry in love complete with a twist at the end. Next the Miller's Tale and on to The Wife of Bath which answers the question, "what is it that every woman desires?" The Nun's Priest's Tale is next followed by the Pardoner's Tale that is quite spooky as it describes the fate of three young men who set off to slay death itself... Before emerging back into the 20th century, prepare yourself with our insides guide to the honest and dishonest traders in the madieval market place. |
